The beauty of Nespresso compatible hot chocolate pods is that you can have a delicious, warming cup of hot chocolate with no mess, no fuss. But there are times when you fancy getting a little more creative in the kitchen, or want to spice up your favourite treat as an indulgence or for a special occasion.
There is plenty you can do to make even the best cup of hot chocolate taste just that little bit better. And there’s really no better time to do it than when we’re in the depths of winter and a bleak January seems to go on forever. We all need a bit of a pick-me-up at this time of year to see us through. If you have spirits of any kind lying round after Christmas, you can liven up your Nespresso hot chocolate with practically any of them to make a winter cocktail of your own. Why not add a shot of peppermint schnapps, for instance, to recreate the unique yet classic combination of mint and chocolate? This is especially good to round off a meal: after dinner mints have long been offered to diners when they’ve finished eating, because peppermint is thought to be an aid to digestion. And you may have noticed that you crave a sweet treat after a meal too. Whether this is due to uneven blood sugar levels or simply habit, a sweet cup of hot minty chocolate will satisfy the cravings without the extra calories from a full-blown dessert. Other liqueurs that taste great with Nespresso compatible hot chocolate include amaretto, that delicious Italian sweet, almond flavour liqueur; or Kahlua, a coffee liqueur that’s the perfect chocolate-pairing.
Perhaps you’ve overdosed on the alcohol and are now in detox mode, though. Don’t worry: there is still plenty you can add that won’t push you over the limit! Imagination is key here, but essentially, have a look through your cupboards and see what you have available. One neat idea is to mimic the trend in good coffee shops all over the UK, for a fraction of the cost of what you will spend in one of these chains. Simply add spices! To recreate that gingerbread taste that’s been everywhere this year, add a pinch of cinnamon, all spice, ginger and a drop of vanilla extract to your hot chocolate or even your Nespresso coffee pods and you’re good to go. Feeling a little more adventurous? It takes hardly any more effort to fully flavour your hot chocolate with the addition of a teaspoon or more, to taste, of peanut butter…it may sound an odd combination, but that salty tang with the sweet hot chocolate is definitely in fashion right now. If you prefer not to mix your flavours too much, there’s always everyone’s favourite, Nutella. Again, whisk it into your hot chocolate for a rich chocolate treat with a hint of hazelnut.
All in all, the sky’s the limit. Nespresso compatible hot chocolate already tastes great made as per the instructions, but liven it up with a few of these ideas and you should find that those January blues will soon disappear!
